About Kalaigaon

Kalaigaon is a small town in Udalguri district of Assam. It is also a Legislative Assembly Constituency in Assam.

Geography of Kalaigaon

The total area of Kalaigaon is 232 km2 and the town is situated at an average altitude of 37 meters. Kalaigaon experiences humidity in summers and the relative humidity is around 82%. The region gets annual rainfall of around 2,000 mm.

History and Etymology of Kalaigaon

The earliest settlers of the Kalaigaon region were the various populations of the Koch kingdom. Till the 1960s Kalaigaon was populated by a large number of wild animals. Kalaigaon became a historical place when Acharya Vinoba Bhabe visited Assam in 1961 and stayed for a few days in Kalaigaon Sevashram along with other national leaders. Veteran Assamese freedom fighter Late Pani Ram Das belonged to Kalaigaon.

According to legends the origin of name of Kalaigaon is associated with a Brahmin priest named Kendukalai. It is said that the Brahmin could cause Goddess Kamakhya appear in her naked form in the temple where he worshiped her. When the Raja of Darrang heard about this he wished to see the Goddess in her naked form. Reluctantly the priest had to bow to the king's wish and asked the king to hide near the temple and watch through a hole when he would begin his worship. The goddess appeared and started dancing in the temple. She, however, saw the eyes of the King through the hole and in a fit of anger decapitated the priest. The name of Kendukalai later degraded to Kalaigaon.

As per the 2011 India census, the population of Kalaigaon is 110862. The population of that of males is 50.77% and that of the females is 49.22%. The population of Kalaigaon consists of communities like Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Koch, Muslim, Rabha etc.
